Cleaving the Ash for Long Bow Staves

A Sunday afternoon spent splitting a log the old-fashioned way - with wedges and axes. The mission was to make billets that could be shaped into staves for long bows. Tom Hill aka Sunday Tom, Conner, Ted and Ryan did the hard work of cleaving, listening for the creaks and the crack as the log split open. We ended up with seven useable 10 foot billets which are now drying, waiting to be rough cut and then made into bows in the summer.
